History of Police Officers for Christ
Police Officers for Christ was founded in 1977 by NYPD Police Officer Gerald Francis. Since its inception, the organization has been dedicated to spreading the gospel throughout the entire department.
Founding and Early Years
In 1977, Officer Gerald Francis surrendered himself to God. He asked for forgiveness of his sins and invited Jesus Christ into his heart, making Him the Lord and Savior of his life. Following the promptings of the Holy Spirit, Officer Francis began gathering other Christian officers for non-denominational fellowship. These fellowships eventually led to the formation of Police Officers for Christ.
Incorporation and Recognition
The organization was officially incorporated in 1981. In 1982, it received official recognition as an "evangelical fraternal organization" by both the New York City Housing Police Department and the New York City Transit Police Department. In 1987, the organization's name was changed from "Cops for Christ" to "Police Officers for Christ." The following year, in 1988, it was formally accepted into the Committee of Police Societies within the NYPD.
Beliefs and Mission
Police Officers for Christ passionately believes in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Bible, as God's word to humanity, teaches that all people have sinned, resulting in a disconnected relationship with God. We believe that Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man, was born on earth, lived a sinless life, and died an innocent death as an atonement for humanity's sins. Through God's grace and the shedding of Christ's blood on the cross, people can be reconciled with God. As Christians, we are now called children of God and are given the responsibility to share this amazing grace with others.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
